Attendance Policy FAQ's
PA Cyber would like to remind families of the Pennsylvania Public School Code for attendance. Students are required to attend every school day, Monday through Friday. If a student has missed three unexcused absences we must report that student to the district of residence for truancy. Furthermore, if a student has 10 consecutive unexcused absences that student must be removed from PA Cyber and returned to their local school district.
Why does PA Cyber have an attendance policy?
PA Cyber is a public school chartered through the state which requires us to be accountable for our student’s attendance.
What does this policy mean?
Students will need to show attendance on a daily basis, Monday through Friday.
How does my child log his/her attendance?
Log into the my school student portal at http://myschool.pacyber.orgon a daily basis before accessing any other website. It would be very beneficial for your child to get into a routine of accessing all needed websites and email through the myschool portal and logging in every morning before starting their course work.
Can I use any computer to log my attendance?
No. Mac computers and all other Apple technology are not compatible with our systems. Also, be sure that you are using Internet Explorer as FireFox and Netscape are also not compatible.
My student is working in the Calvert Curriculum. Do I still need to log my child’s attendance daily?
Yes. Even though the majority of your work is completed offline, you will still need to log your child’s attendance online on a daily basis, Monday-Friday.
What does the new truancy procedure involve?
After 3 unexcused absences, your school district is notified and truancy may be pursued by the school district. Act 29 of 1995 allows for a $300 fine and the loss of a driver’s license for 90 days to 6 months. After 10 unexcused absences, your child can be removed from PA Cyber and returned to their local school district.
Are there excused absences?
If your child does not attend school, you will need to provide a valid excuse to your Instructional Supervisor. A valid excuse includes illness, family emergency, death of a family member, medical or dental appointments, court ordered hearings, religious holidays, school activities, and educational travel with prior approval.
What if my family takes a vacation during the school year?
You will need to let your Instructional Supervisor know ahead of time and your child will be expected to make up any and all work that he or she missed during that week including watching the playbacks of virtual classes (if applicable).
What can happen if my child does not have a valid excuse for missing school?
If you cannot provide a valid excuse as to why your child missed a certain day or days, this day(s) will be marked as unexcused and PA Cyber will continue with our truancy procedure.
What if my child logs in but does not work in his or her courses?
Along with showing daily attendance, students are required to keep adequate pacing within their courses which amounts to one hour per subject per day. If a student is logging into the myschool portal but not submitting any assignments, they are not meeting our academic requirements. Your Instructional Supervisor will take the necessary discipline actions which will include our Administrative Review Board Process.
What is the Administrative Review Board Process (ARB)?
The Administrative Review Board (ARB) gathers information on students who are: consistently failing to do any, or any significant amount of work; truant; tardy; and, who are engaging in other unexcused attendance violations as defined by the PA Cyber Code of Conduct.
Who is on the Administrative Review Board?
The ARB is comprised of the Academy Leader, the student’s Instructional Supervisor (IS), a guidance counselor, and other support personnel as deemed necessary by PA Cyber, including a Special Education Supervisor to the extent applicable due to a student’s disability requiring specially designed instruction. The ARB will work with the student and his/her parent(s) or guardian(s) in an effort to aid the student’s success and to attempt to minimize or eliminate the truancy and attendance issues.
Who can I contact regarding questions I have about attendance?
Please contact your Instructional Supervisor with any questions regarding attendance.
